1979 All-Star Game
Game Summary The outcome of the 1979 All Star Classic seemed never in question as the American League dominated the senior circuit by defeating them 13-6. They rocked loser Pete Vukovich for 6 runs in 1 1/3 innings. Reggie Jackson wasted no time in making the AL’s presence known by hitting a two run shot in the first inning. In all, Vuk let up four doubles in addition to Jackson’s homer. However, the biggest hero was an unlikely one. Kansas City Royal catcher Darrell Porter who didn’t see action till the 6th inning, nevertheless racked up 5 rbis for the night. Porter pinch hit for California Angel catcher Brian Downing and rapped a single to score two runs. He wasn’t through yet. He stayed in to catch and came to bat in the 8th inning with runners on first and second. He saw a pitch he liked and put into the stands for a three-run homerun. California Angel outfielder Fred Lynn figured prominently in the AL’s victory. Lynn was 2-4 with 2 doubles, 3 runs scored and 2 rbis. For the NL, San Francisco Giant Mike Ivie hit a pinch hit two-run homerun in the 7th. In the 9th, LA Dodger secondbasemen Davey Lopes, 0 for 4 up until that point, hit a two run homerun. Jack Billingham, the AL starter, got the win. Billingham went two innings giving up only 1 hit and striking out 2 batters. Win or lose, this game was especially sweet for Lou Brock who will be retiring at the end of this season. Brock who is has been hitting .375 for the St. Louis Cardinals was excited to get in the game as a pinch hitter and promptly responded by producing a base knock to score teammate Keith Hernandez. |
