NL East ; 5/13-

Chicago Cubs-  The Cubs are the good luck team as their hitting (.274) and pitching (4.48 ERA) are adequate but nothing special but are enough to get them an 18-14 record, good enough for first place.  Dave Kingman has 11 homers and 23 ribbies but catcher Barry Foote has been the big surprise with 5 homers and 20 rbis (8 in one game).  Starter Ricky Reuschel has been a hard luck pitcher with a 2.63 ERA but a 4-4 record.  Bruce Sutter leads the league in saves.

New York Mets-  The truly surprising team in the replay.  The Mets were last during the actual 1979 season.  Joel Youngblood has positively killed the ball, hitting at a .391 pace.  He also has 34 rbis and 26 runs.  Their pitching staff is led by the exploits of Tom Hausman (6-0, 2.95) and Pete Falcone (5-3, 4.38).

St. Louis Cardinals-  Pete Vukovich (5-1, 1.80) is the powerhouse pitcher behind this team.  D pitcher John Denny has pitched above himself at 2-2 and a 2.98 ERA.  The Cards problem has been lack of power.  Ted Simmons leads the team with only 3 homers.  Lou Brock contributes in his farewell year with a .300 BA and 12 SB.

Philadelphia Phillies-  A fun team to play.  Pete Rose (.360, 26 runs), Mike Schmidt (11 homers, 29 ribbies), and Bake McBride (.318, 31 rbi) highlight this team.  Steve Carlton (3-2, 4.37 38 K) is overshadowed by unlikely ace Dick Ruthven (5-2, 3.21)

Pittsburgh Pirates-  The Bucs are powered by the 1-2 punch of Willie Stargell (12 HR, 24 rbi) and Bill Robinson (10 HR, 22 rbi).  Bruce Kison (3-1, 2.25) and John Candelaria (2-2, 3.55) head up the pitching staff.  Buck Jackson has a 1.17 ERA in middle relief.

Montreal Expos- The lower we go in the standings, the better the teams SEEM to be.  Montreal has a phenomenal pitching staff and the likes of Andre Dawson, Larry Parrish, Gary Carter, Ellis Valentine, and Warren Cromartie in their lineup.  Yet they can’t put it together and languish in last place.  Carter leads the team with 6 homers and 20 ribbies.  Rudy May stars with a 3-0 record and a .73 ERA.
