Baseball Zealot Radio Show #10- coldest week this year and we’re supposed to talk baseball?

We’re in double digits now.

We go a little off-topic and bring in Zealot reader and Bear fan Tyler Davis who was unlucky enough to go to the Super Bowl. He gives us his impression of the game. As it always does when he and I talk, the discussion does eventually move to the Cubs so it’s ok.

Chuck and I jabber about ticket prices at Wrigley and the Cell.

It seems a lot of baseball people passed away recently and he and I do our best to remember them.

And then there were ballplayers still alive that some teams were trying to forget. Will any team pick up Juan Gonzalez?

Take a listen and tell a friend.

Chicago Bears

bears

The Super Bowl. The Chicago Bears play the Indianapolis Colts. Two midwestern cities within 3 hours of each other. The East Coast sports media can stick it. Go Bears!

If you’re a Bears fan, check out Bearscast.com. It’s a podcast in the same vein as Cubscast.com but they cover… yeah, the Bears.

(Before the Sox fans start whining, there is also a Soxcast.com which believe it or not, I listen to once in a while. It’s pretty good if you’re into the Sox kind of thing).

Anyway, best of luck to the Bears.

Escalator to a Different Dimension

Sunday around 12:30pm, the Cubs convention was winding down and with the Bears playoff game just an hour and a half away, I figured it was time to go. I took one look around at the friendly fans in blue and stepped on the escalator up to the main level…

… to a different dimension.

Something was wrong. What I saw was not right. I didn’t see friendly Cub fans on their way home from the convention. No, what I saw was loud, people dressed in black… and gold.. and they were wearing loud, garishly colored necklaces. Did I take the magic escalator to an eternal Mardi Gras?

Apparently, not. Apparently, all the New Orleans Saints fans who had come up for Sunday’s game had come to the Chicago Hilton. Or it just seemed that way. There was rhyme to their reason. We at the convention had heard that the Chicago Bears were staying at the Hilton. I’m sure that this wasn’t lost on the Saints fans.

saints

They were yelling and screaming. One even even had a teddy bear and would set it down on the sidewalk and would tackle it,

Others would pretend-block Bears fans that would pass by… in a good natured way.

The one place I was in Chicago and it was right in the middle of a pack of Saints fans.

Oh, well…

Sorry you made the trip for nothing

I actually was on the train during the second half having watched the first half at the train station. The conductor announced the score over the PA. In this day and age, I wonder if those with Tivo would just as soon not know the score.

I was picked up by my family and my six-year-old daughter dutifully informed me of the score. The Bears had 39 and “New Zealand” scored 14.

Vasher takes it for 108

Those of you Chicago Bears fans out there who didn’t see the game missed the play of the year as Nathan Vasher ran back a field goal return for 108 yards for a touchdown.

Longest TD ever.

See the video of Vasher’s TD return here.

A friend of mine was at Soldier Field and sitting at the Bears 12 yd line when it happened.  According to him, Vasher hesitated for a split-second, deciding whether to kneel.  To me, the amazing thing, aside from his TD return, was his decision to return it and that his decision was the right one in hindsight.

Go Bears.
