A’s bringing back the gold

Are we seeing a retro trend in uniforms?  The Oakland A’s have announced they are “going with the gold” similar with the Finley-style unis.  Team GM Billy Beane refers to them as “canary yellow”.  These uniforms will serve as the alternate to the white home uniforms (hint: they’re beta-testing them).

Yeah, it’s another move to move more merchandise to the baby boomers but I like the style.  Next up, Houston’s bright orange with the star on the chest???

New patches will be worn in memory of Yankee legends

In light of the recent deaths of Yankee legends Bob Sheppard and George Steinbrenner, the New York ballclub’s graphic designers have been busy coming up with a patch that will adorn the uniforms of the Yankee players.

Both are stark black and white to match the Yankee uniforms.  The Steinbrenner patch includes his full name plus his initials “GMS”.  At the bottom, it says The Boss”.  Nice touch.

Sheppard’s patch is a nicely done graphic of an old time PA mike within a baseball diamond and simply says, “Bob Sheppard The Voice of Yankee Stadium”.

The GMS patch will be worn above the NY on the left breast on the home jerseys and above the YORK on away jerseys.

You’ll find the Sheppard patch on the Yankees’ left sleeves.

Ugliest uniforms, really??

Life.com  presents us with a slideshow of “Baseball’s Ugliest Uniforms. Ever.”

I respectfully disagree on some of them.  Many include uniforms from the 1970s.  Those unis were bright, colorful and some would even say gaudy.  They reflected the times when people sought to differentiate themselves and saw no shame in it.

Later, the late 90s and the 00s brought us the era of conformity and corporate standardization in term of uniforms.  Even the smallest change brings the loudest call of condemnation.  The other symptom of recent times is the constant change in uniforms or excuses to bring out a new line uniforms presumably to increase the bottom line for MLB.

So yes, getting back to my original point, I do like the older 70s uniforms.  They may be gaudy from today’s perspective but they hearken back to a day when I grew up with the game.

Besides, if you want to talk about ugly baseball uniforms, I’m surprised Life.com didn’t have THESE on their list:

Sorry Sox fans but those WERE ugly.

New unis for the Orioles

Looks like the Baltimore Orioles will be wearing new uniforms next year.

“We’re always re-evaluating our brands and we’re proud to represent our local fans and area,” (Greg Bader, Baltimore’s director of communications) said of the changes, which include restoring the word Baltimore to the team’s road jersey. “And with these moves, we hope to connect to the community, to honor the 55-year history of our franchise and to also look to the future.”

Apparently, the changes “have been in the plans for almost year”.

The uniforms were unveiled at a ceremony at which over 2500 people attended.  Jim Palmer, no stranger to modeling,  was on hand to model the uniform along with OF Nick Markakis.
