HELFAER FIELD

There is a very nice little league ballpark in the parking lot outside of Miller Park in Milwaukee. The home plate from old County Stadium is on exhibit by Helfaer Field for all the little leaguers to see. Two little league teams from Kenosha wrap things up. Here is a nice view from the outfield. … Continue reading “HELFAER FIELD”

8/7 Linescore of the Day – David Eckstein

David Eckstein, St. Louis Cardinals 5-7 leadoff man David Eckstein hit a one out grand slam in the bottom of the 9th off Atlanta reliever Chris Reitsma to turn a 3-1 loss into a 5-3 Cardinal winner. Eckstein also doubled, walked twice, and stole a base in the game, not a bad day’s work.

SWEET PAINTIN KATIE

While tailgating before my first ever game at Miller Park in Milwaukee we met Katie Simon. Ms. Katie is an arm artist who also paints faces. She charges whatever you’d like to pay, which makes it all legal. She once painted over 400 mostly shamrocks on St. Patrick’s Day. Ms. Katie has been a fixture … Continue reading “SWEET PAINTIN KATIE”

MILLER PARK REVIEW

I recently went to Miller Park in Milwaukee. Here is my review of the “new” park. Hadn’t been to a game since the old County Stadium. In fact the first MLB game I ever attended was a benefit game between the White Sox and the Cubs in 1968 in County Stadium. Miller Park does tailgating up right as the parking lots open three hours before game time, they give you plenty of room to barbecue, and plenty of receptacles for dumping hot coals. It’s a very nice park with lots of room around the park with beautiful landscaping. They needed to build this ballpark with a retractable roof to prevent rainouts with fans coming to the park from all over Wisconsin. But the retractable roof in my opinion gave me the sense more that I was inside a shopping mall rather than a ballpark.

The Pirates’ pitching proved to be the cure for yet another poor offensive team last night as the Dodgers lead by Saenz pounded the Buccos. Saenz came into the game in a 1 for 11 slump and broke out of it in a big way. Olmedo’s performance overshadowed the first career homer for Pirates rookie Brad “Big Country” Eldred.

Tough day to choose a LSOTD.  Fifteen players had 3 or more hits.  And Ortiz had an interesting outing against the Braves.

Vlad is doing his best to reward his fantasy owners with yummy stats after being out with the injury (yeah, I’m sure fantasy owners are foremost on his mind :-P).

Note: You probably won’t see any posts from me for a week or so.  I’m going on a well-deserved vacation.  The site will be left in the capable hands of the Baseball Zealot staff who will be posting in my absence.  I’ve told my wife that we need to schedule stops at wireless cafes so I may peek in and see how things are going.

until then,
