Remember back in May? When after one start, everyone thought this Hamels kid was the next coming of Steve Carlton? Or at least Randy Lerch?

Well, fast forward to reality yesterday. After his loss to Atlanta when he gave up 7 runs, his ERA now stands at a hefty 5.98. Amazingly, he had twelve strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

Two lessons here: Strikeouts don’t win ballgames and don’t get too over excited about a rookie prospect after one good game.

Cub Untradables

I was chatting away with Mr Coworker today about the Cubs’ future especially in light of the coming trade deadline. He asked me if I had to choose three Cubs who were untouchable, who would they be? Who did I think was so important to the Cubs organization that they should be considered part of a rebuilding phase?

Apparently, he and the other Cub fan on the floor came up with the same three names.

Hmm… well Lee, right? And Zambrano, too. Those two were easy.

I told him I couldn’t think of anyone else.

His answer? Michael Barrett.

And you know what? I think he’s right.

Yes, his stats look good this year but it’s more than that.

The guy plays hard, he’s only 30 years old, is a team leader and calls a decent game.

Of course there’s this, too:

I jest, of course.

The Beachwood Reporter, however feels differently.

7/23/06 Linescore of the Day: Francisco Liriano

5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 10 K (Win) Imagine what the kid could have done in a complete game. Alas, a high pitch count forced him out. Kudos to the Twins bullpen for adding seven more Ks in relief.

Sometimes you just take what life gives you

Logging in to MLB.TV’s Mosaic, I immediately saw that the Cubs-Mets game was not blacked out. Woo hoo. The baseball gods are looking out for me tonight.

I watch as the Cubs score 5 in the fifth giving Maddux a 8-4 lead. Boy, it doesn’t get any better than this.

But I forget this is the Cubs and they’re playing the Mets and nothing is a sure thing. As I write this, the Mets have come back for 3 runs in the 7th to make it a one run game.

Every Met starter has gotten so far except Reyes and he’s due up first in the bottom of the ninth.

Let’s go Cubbies!

Update: My karma remained strong and Dempster pulled it out. Cubs win!

Sum-sum-summertime for the Illini

A few of the Illini baseball players, while not in C-U, have been in college leagues throughout the country. And some have been doing quite well. Take Jake Toohey, for example. Pitching for the Rochester Honkers in the Northwoods League, he’s made the All-Star team with 13 saves and a 2.12 ERA. The Honkers have … Continue reading “Sum-sum-summertime for the Illini”

Take Jake Toohey, for example. Pitching for the Rochester Honkers in the Northwoods League, he’s made the All-Star team with 13 saves and a 2.12 ERA. The Honkers have the best record in their division.

Illini shortstop Shawn Roof has also made the All-Star team in the Coastal Plain League. With Dom Altobelli, Aaron Martin and Ryan Hastings, he has helped the Fayetteville SwampDogs to a first half championship.

Paul Maholm

I remember earlier this winter telling everyone at the Illowa APBA rookie draft that “Paul Maholm will be as good as Zach Duke”. Well, right now I’m pretty much on target but not really in the way that I thought. Right now, Maholm’s .394 OBP is higher than any other starter in the NL. (h/t … Continue reading “Paul Maholm”

Good thing I didn’t listen to my own advice.

Too bad no one else did.

And as for my Zach Duke comparsion, I was really high on Duke last year when he first came up. By the end of the season, I reconsidered my position. However, I did think he’d have a better year than this.

Gonzo got the mojo goin’ after a unwanted day off

Before too much is made of this, Luis Gonzalez is trying to put the whole thing to rest. The best way he can. Yes, yes, he groused a little about not playing in Thursday’s game. Let’s not make a scandal of it. Gonzo, one of the D-backs more popular players in recent years (does anyone … Continue reading “Gonzo got the mojo goin’ after a unwanted day off”

Yes, yes, he groused a little about not playing in Thursday’s game. Let’s not make a scandal of it. Gonzo, one of the D-backs more popular players in recent years (does anyone remember the 2001 World Series? I do.) came back on Friday for three hits including his 526th double. That ties him with Dave Parker (the Cobra!) for 30th all-time.

The Diamondbacks won 6-2 over the Rockies.

Popular as he is in Arizona, Luis may not be there for very long, though. The Rangers have their eyes on him.

Speaking of the D-backs, Orlando Hudson who started out poor this year, has really turned it on. On May 24, he was battting a paltry .218. The next day, he went 4 for 4 and since then has batted .309 with a +.500 slugging percentage.

I wish there was something positive to say about Russ Ortiz’ outing against the Devil Rays or even his current situation with the Orioles. But I am at at a loss.

The linescore tells an ugly story but add to that his team gave him a two-run lead in the top half of the first. Don’t forget there was a wild pitch as well as a walk with the bases loaded.

Russ Ortiz is now 1-16 in his last 22 starts going back to May of last year. He has also allowed 5 homers in his 12 innings with the Orioles.

Volin’ this Saturday

The Vermilion Voles are playing a intrasquad exhibition game this Saturday at Catlin’s (IL) Sesquicentennial. Game time is 1:00. Come on out for a good time. If you haven’t seen them already, check out the photos of their game against the St Louis Perfectos. Jim Knoblauch of the Voles dropped me an email the other day. He assured me that Marty “Tumbleweed” Rife is doing just fine after his slight injury in the field.

Correction!!! My mistake.. The game is on Saturday. My goof.

Two Firsts

Two things happened for the first time this season for the Cubs during the their 4-1 defeat of the Houston Astros. They won on a Thursday. They hit back-to-back homers. Long time comin’ for both.
