It looks like everyone will be there. Zambrano, Soriano, Santo, DLee, Barrett, Wood, Prior (please be gentle with those last two, fans!),

Among the old-timers, there will be Lee Smith, Mike Bielecki, Rod Beck (the Shooter!),

And of course, Piniella and Hendry.

Saturday morning’s session is geared for the ladies because it is called “Not for Women Only”. That is usually a cue for me to stay away. Anyway, it is described as: ” The Girlfriends put Mike Bielecki, Neal Cotts, Ryan Theriot, Scott Eyre & Sean Marshall in the hot seat. You never know what they might ask!”

Too bad DonS isn’t going. That’s just his kinda thing. Besides Mike Bielecki is going on 47 years old. Isn’t it about time he settle down?

Congrats to Batgirl!

A belated congratulations to Batgirl (her most awesome baseball blog covers the Twins). She has just had a baby boy over the holidays! Nice timing by her to get this taken care of during the off-season. Just kidding! Congrats, Batgirl!

My last post was a bit of a rant. Here’s a story that will help restore your faith in humanity.

After a 20 year-old suffered a seizure in a NY subway tunnel and fell in the path of an oncoming subway train, a stranger jumped off the platform leaving his two small children to rescue the young man.

The only way to save the man (and himself) was to curl both of them between the tracks so the train would go over them. The train braked but the first two cars did go over them.

Both escaped with minor injuries.

In this day of sports “heroes”, it’s good to reminded of the true heroes that are out there.

What goes on in the mind of a HOF voter?

It’s beyond me.

I just listened to an interview on MLB Radio’s Under the Lights with MLB.com reporter Jim Street who has made up his mind who he will vote for in the Hall of Fame vote. He shared his ballot during his interview. It’s not often a radio guest frustrates me twice on separate issues but Street managed to do so.

Street tells us that he has voted for Garvey in the past and has voted for him again this year. One reason he claims is because of “his character” and what he did “off the field”. Fine. He’s a fan of Mr, Paternity Suit.

Then he’s asked about Jim Rice. Well, he says Rice “wasn’t the most cooperative” with the media and he wasn’t the most personable.

So he likes Steve Garvey’s off the field character despite the adultery and paternity suit but because Rice wasn’t nicey-nice with the media and was moody in general, he’s going to hold that against him. Forget the fact that there were racial tensions in Boston at the time and maybe Rice was just a moody kind of guy.

Then he goes on to talk about Mark McGwire. He’s not going to vote for Big Mac.

But don’t get the idea that he’s skipping Mac because of steroid issue. No, Street thinks based on McGwire’s stats alone he doesn’t belong. He insists he’s a one-dimensional player. Street even goes as far as to bring up the fact that McGwire only has 12 career stolen bases. Please.

According to Street, “this isn’t a homerun derby”.

I’m looking at Mark McGwire’s entry in Baseball Reference and his Appearances on Leaderboards section is a page and half long. And they’re not ALL related to homeruns.

Sportswriters, if you have a problem with McGwire’s alleged issue with steroids, be honest with it. But don’t justify it by saying that you wouldn’t vote for him anyway because “he only won one Gold Glove.” (another Jim Street gem)

Here’s the Under the Lights interview with Jim Street, MLB.com reporter (the interview is toward the end of the show)

Cotts signs with Cubs… with a “Glass Half Full” Incentive

Lefty Neal Cotts who was acquired from the White Sox, signed a deal with the Cubs yesterday. The deal was for $825,000 for one year. A lot of negative press was made over Hendry’s signings of Ted Lilly and Jason Marquis for mucho millions of bucks. My take is that the Cotts deal will be one of the overlooked ones this off-season. Yes, Cotts had an down year in 2006. But he’s a quality lefty who Hendry got for a decent price.

Unless I miss my guess, Hendry is planning on putting Cotts in the rotation. In 2003, the last time he started, he was 9-7 with a 2.16 ERA. So he can get the job done from the rotation.

And you gotta like Cotts’ optimism. He has a World Series MVP incentive in his new contract.

As a Cub fan, I would to love see it.

Whither Uribe?

Kenny Williams doesn’t seem too concerned about Juan Uribe’s legal troubles. “If he happens to go to jail, I’ll be looking for another shortstop,” said Williams back in October. “I have not been given any reason to be worried just yet.” Maybe Kenny needs to pay more attention. Of course, legal troubles is a nice … Continue reading “Whither Uribe?”

Of course, legal troubles is a nice way of saying that Juan may have to report to the Dominican Republican court system twice a month for this year. Juan remains resolved that he will return the majors once this is taken care of, though.

“But first I am going to resolve this, and then I will go to the Major Leagues,” Uribe added.

Hitting coach Greg Walker focuses on Uribe’s offense:

“Uribe can get better,” Walker said. “Will he end up leading the league in walks? No chance. But he can get better, and we will figure out ways to help him out.”

One thing at a time, GW.

Soriano will attend Chicago Cubs Convention

Big news in the Alfonso Soriano household… he’s a daddy again. Angel Soriano was born last Wednesday. He’s the third child in the family. Speaking of Soriano, good news for Cubs fans… the Missus will let Alfonso off of diaper duty for the weekend of January 19-21 so he can attend the Cubs Convention.

KC’s got a believer

Somebody finally has something good to say about the Gil Meche deal. USA Today’s Jorge Ortiz actually puts the KC deal on his Top Five Best Signings list. Says Ortiz: This one’s a hunch. Somebody finally has something good to say about the Gil Meche deal. USA Today’s Jorge Ortiz actually puts the KC deal on his Top Five Best Signings list.

Says Ortiz:

This one’s a hunch. It certainly runs counter to conventional thinking to give Meche, who has never thrown 190 innings in a season, $55 million. But so does the notion of the Royals making such a dramatic move, and that’s the point. They were going to have to overpay to get anybody to come to Kansas City, and by signing a desirable pitcher in his prime, new GM Dayton Moore has sent a message: The Royals are open for business and finally willing to compete.

I’m not convinced. I agree that KC was sending a message. They also needed to spend a bit more to get players to come to the Royals. I just think that for $55 million they could have gotten a bit more than Gil Meche. Even in this season’s market.

Day-by-Day Database going back in time

David Pinto from Baseball Musings has been during the holidays. His stats database Day-by-Day Database now includes stats that go back to 1965. I’ve used the Day-by-Day Database a fair amount and it’s pretty incredible. If you are into analyzing batters’ splits, comparing two batters or anything stat related, check it out. Hmm, just noticed… Alfonso Soriano has hit .160 in Wrigley Field.

But it was a small sampling, right?
