Yesterday I checked in to see the owner of Uptown
Pizza. Uptown Pizza is the best pizza you can get in
Waupaca, WI. Waupaca was celebrating its 150th
birthday. Brad, Uptown’s owner, is a big Brewer fan,
even before this year. Brad checks out the Zealot
from time to time and he says, “I scrolled and
scrolled and scrolled and scrolled, looking for
something about his beloved Brewers and was
disappointed to find nothing”. So here goes…

A friend of mine asked whether he should keep JJ Hardy
on his fantasy baseball team. I told him JJ was a
.260 hitter, at best, and would end up hitting 12
homers. Since giving my advice, Hardy has had two 4
for 5 games and has hit his 9th home run of the
season. I’m afraid to see whether my friend took my
bad advice, well it could have been worse, I could’ve
cut him from my fantasy team.

I’m not going to lie and say I saw this coming. But
it is nice to see, the Milwaukee Brewers in 1st place
in the NL Central Division. I picked the Cardinals to
win the Central, but with Chris Carpenter out for
three months, even the magicians of LaRussa & Duncan
look to be overmatched.

But the Brewers success has much more to do with
Milwaukee taking care of business rather than the
misfortune of the Redbirds. The Brew Crew has won two
thirds of the games they’ve played thus far. Granted
it’s very early in the season, only 30 games played.

And living in Chicago I know firsthand a good start
doesn’t always translate to a successful season, the
Cubs have won many a April Championships, only to
falter as the year wore on.

But I don’t think that will happen to this year’s
Brewer squad. First off they have a steady manager in
Ned Yost who seems to roll with the punches, he
doesn’t get too up and he doesn’t get too down. The
Brewers have a good lineup 1-8, with a good mix of
young guys and veterans. But pitching is where it’s
at, and this is where Milwaukee really has it all
together. The starting staff is made up of Ben
Sheets, Chris Capuano, Jeff Suppan, Dave Bush, and
Claudio Vargas. You’d be hard pressed finding a
better starting five in baseball. And Coco (could
there be a better nickname?) Cordero has been closing
the door everytime out and Derrick Turnbow seems to
have found his game as the setup man.

Now everybody, ROLL OUT THE BARRELS & WE’LL HAVE A
BARREL OF FUN… Can I get a bratwurst with
sauerkraut & a brewski?

I’m not about to analyze the Top Ten list but I will say this: I was disappointed that it included team specific blogs. Once you include them, there are soooo many good many out there that it’s hard to narrow it down to ten.

Anyway, nice going, David!

5/4/07 Linescore of the Day: Raul Ibanez

rauol

Raul Ibanez: 4 for 6, 2 runs, 2 rbis

Ibanez was part of the hitting parade that was the Seattle Mariners yesterday against the Yanks’ Kei Igawa and their bullpen. Seven Mariners had multi-hit games (3 had three or more hits.

I almost had Ibanez in my fantasy draft. I even bid on him. But I apparently was sleeping on the job and the auction had already been called. Let a lesson be learned there folks.

It couldn’t get any better today for the University of Illinois.

With Illinois going against Michigan in a doubleheader, I had Gametracker going on all day today. When the Illini won the first in extras that was great. When they won the second game behind a solid performance by Scott Shaw, I was ecstatic. I even woke up my wife with my hoots and hollering.

Not only is Michigan first in the conference but they are #13 in the nation. And as I noted before, Illinois will be fighting for the chance to compete in the Big Ten Tournament. The doubleheader sweep didn’t move them up in the standings but it does widen the gap between them and seventh place Purdue.

Highlights from the first game include Mike Rohde homerun with 2 rbis, Joe Bonadonna went 2 for 2 with 2 runs and Shawn Roof was 2 for 4 with run and a rbi. The game was tied after seven and in the top of the eighth, Key hits by Ryan Snowden and Kyle Hudson were key to a three run rally.

In Game 2, the Illini were dominant from the start. In the first, Five hits including a homer by Ryan Hastings put Illinois 5 runs ahead. That pretty much sealed the victory right there though Michigan did manage to score 3 runs in the 4th inning. Scott Shaw got the complete game victory.

There’s one more game against Michigan tomorrow. Good luck, Illini!!

Update: The Illini fell in Sunday’s game 10-5. A good series split nonetheless! Nice going, guys!

I believe Brian from Big Ten Hardball was attending the series this weekend so I’m looking forward to hearing about it from him. I’ll post any links once their available.

By the way, just so this doesn’t fall by the wayside, Lars Davis is now in national contention for the 2007 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Award. Good luck, Lars!!

Angels-White Sox in Late April:

Friday night. Kevin, Dawn, Bob and I sat down the third base line, 4 rows from the top. Two rows behind us, directly behind Bob and Dawn, sat my “obnoxious fan of the year.” I hope. Friday night. Kevin, Dawn, Bob and I sat down the third base line, 4 rows from the top. Two rows behind us, directly behind Bob and Dawn, sat my “obnoxious fan of the year.” I hope. He started on the first pitch (actually, on the lineup introductions). Yelling “You suck” at every Angel when he batted or fielded a ball. Yelling “You suck, ump” on every strike to a White Sox guy or non-strike to an Angel. EVERY ONE. I don’t think he missed yelling on more than five pitches. I never turned around: My “ignore” feature was in high gear. About the fourth inning, Bob said that since the Sox were winning, he and I should switch seats to “change the Angels’ luck.” I told him that I was born on a Sunday, but not LAST Sunday. That was HIS seat and HE was stuck with it. The guy was hoarse by the 8th inning, but the effort never lessened. We thought he was drunk, but Kevin turned around in mid-game and said that the guy was about 17 years old and was drinking pop. My companions, all White Sox fans, were effuse in their apologies to me for the behavior. I think the guy bothered THEM (through White Sox fan association) more than he bothered ME. Every team has a few of those. Someday, I will tell you about the “jumbo woman” in Milwaukee who was rooting for the Angels.

Saturday night. That was NOT the problem. In fact, there was NO PROBLEM. Kevin and I went alone. Kevin got our seats in the “Scout Area.” List Price: $210 each – Parking Pass in the best lot included. Seven rows behind the screen. Included a free buffet and bar from 4:30 to 7:30 in the White Sox club room. I was the only one in THERE wearing Angel gear. Not just some hamburger deal, either. Prime rib. Baked turkey. Delicious ribs. Lots of salads and vegetables. Free beer and wine. Then free ballpark food and drinks the entire game (no 7th inning cutoff tonight) served to my game seat by White Sox employees. We were “stuffed and hammered” by the end of the 3-0 Angels victory. “Real White Sox fans” Teddy Ballgame and Rob were way up by where Nancy Faust sits (did the White Sox get rid of her? She wasn’t there, either game). “Real White Sox fans” Tom and Theresa were way down the right field line in the upper deck. And there I was, 20 feet from the Angel on-deck circle. Great time, topped off by victory.

By the way, Illinois fell to Michigan 4-3 today in their first game of the weekend. What a nailbiter. That’s tough to lose so close to a powerhouse like the Wolverines. Tanner Roark pitched respectably but lost his first game since March. Three more to go.

Go Illini!!

5/3/07 Linescore of the Day: Russ Gload

Russ Gload: 4 for 4, 2B, 3B, 3 runs, 2 rbis

Amazingly, there were four players who went 4 for 4 on Thursday; Gload, the Twins’ Nick Punto, Cleveland’s Victor Martinez and Boston’s Wily Mo Pena. However, Russ Gload made the most of his hit parade. Punto who garnered just one rbi and Pena just one run were downright wasteful in their efforts.

Gload’s four hits puts him over the .300 mark at .307.

5/02/07 Linescore of the Day: Gary Sheffield

Gary Sheffield: 4 for 4, HR, run, 2 rbi

Sheffield is younger than me. But not by much.

He may fall into the category of players that had a horrendous April but will right himself and have a decent year (see Pujols, Soriano et al). The jury is still out though.

Just in this game, his average went up 35 points. Also, in the last 10 games he’s hit .378. Before you say it’s all because of his 4-4 game, I will say he had 3 other multi-hit games in that span.

So I do think Shef is showing signs of improvement.

Oh, Detriot won by a slim margin 3-2.
