Jorge Posada is the topic of late at Baseball Reference’s Stat of the Day Blog.

Andy crunched the numbers and determined that as of now, Posada is having the best year for a 35-year catcher using the OPS+ stat.

Also, Steve L has found that if Posada continues his season, he will have five seasons with 130 games and and 120 OPS+ since turning 30 years of age.   Nobody else has done it more than twice.  You can see the list here.

I never gave Posada more than two looks before (and honestly didn’t think he 35 years old already).  Both these stats point to a catcher with some durability to be sure.

Orel Hershiser’s record of 59 consecutive scoreless innings in 1988 has been considered one of the more “unbreakable” records in baseball.  At one point, ESPN’s Page 2 column listed it among the records that “may never be beaten”

Should Orel be worried?

Granted after last night’s complete game shutout of the Braves, Brandon Webb is only tied for 12th on the list (with Rube Foster) with 42.  But consider this… he is only two complete game shutouts away from Hershiser’s record.

Time will tell.  Meanwhile, I’m impressed that Webbie is doing in style with a complete game shutouts and not 6 inning stints.  His last 3 starts were complete games and the two before that he last seven.  Any fantasy leaguers who own him must be quite pleased.

In a season where we have seen plenty of records and milestones broken, will we see one more?

This Cub trio went for an incredible 13 for 15 on Thursday.  The Cubs as a team, managed to score their 12 runs against the Reds with 20 hits without the use of the longball.

It was DeRosa’s first 5-hit game of his career.

One of the top pitchers from Illinois,  Crosby had committed to the University of Illinois but was drafted in the 2007 First Year Player Draft by the Tigers.  He was a fifth round pick and his high round status demanded a high contract.  With time, the Tigers apparently agreed.

Mom’s happy too.  Denise Crosby is a managing editor at The Beacon News and she wrote an op-ed piece regarding her son’s signing.  Rather odd piece though in some parts.    I’ll let you be the judge.

Either way, I’m sorry that Casey won’t be part of the Illini team next year but the silver lining is that he’ll be a teammate (eventually) of Shawn Roof’s.

Give it up for Scotty.  My buddy Brando has him on his APBA team and sees his 07 stats dwindle and wonders if 08 would be a good year to draft a thirdbaseman.

Well, yesterday, Rolen is trying to dispel that idea.

That said, next year’s rookie draft for our league will have quite tasty thirdbasemen with Braun, Gordon, Kouzmanoff, Iwamura, etc.

But keep it quiet, I’m in the market for a thirdbaseman, too.
