10/12/07 LCS Linescore of the Day: Manny Ramirez

With a stunning 10-2 defeat of the Cleveland Indians, you gotta figure the LSOTD will come from the Red Sox.  Sure enough, Manny Ramirez drove three runs and scored two behind two hits.

The Red Sox got to 19-game winner CC Sabathia who I thought would be key for the Indians in the series.  Beckett was solid if not spectacular and that was more than enough for the Red Sox.

Mazzone flies the Orioles’ coop

Leo Mazzone has been fired as pitching coach of the Baltimore Orioles.  He had one year left of his contract which the Orioles are responsible.

Mazzone, who it seemed, could do wrong with the Atlanta Braves, had mixed success with the Orioles.  No one can argue with what he accomplished with Erik Bedard.  Yet the Baltimore staff finished with a 5.17 ERA in 2007.

Did they give Leo enough time?  With young hurlers like Adam Loewen, Jeremy Guthrie, it’s hard to tell.  He had quick success when he came on with the Braves and maybe the Orioles expected the same.

Already thinking about next year

The 2008 Chicago Cubs (tentative) schedule is out.  Hmm.. September is full of intra-division games and we end the season with the Brewers.  (hat tip to Bleed Cubbie Blue)

What now, Cubs?

Christopher Reina from RealGM wrote a decent post mortem on the Chicago Cubs, discussing their situation entering the 2008 season.  That said, I hope he kidding about this: I would feel comfortable handing Milton Bradley over to Piniella. He hit .313 with 11 homeruns in 144 at-bats for the Padres before infamously blowing out his … Continue reading “What now, Cubs?”

LaRussa decision on hold

According to AP, the decision whether to keep LaRussa is being delayed.  Basically, they’re waiting for a decision on who the new Cardinals GM will be since Jocketty was let go last week.  Word has it there has been a lot of infighting and power plays within the upper management which drove Jocketty out.  The … Continue reading “LaRussa decision on hold”

A piece of trivia on Jocketty… he was a fan of APBA baseball.

Gearing up for the ILLOWA APBA All-Star Game

Our Illowa APBA League All-Star Game is almost a week away.

Our managers have voted for the starters and their voices have been heard.  You can see the results here.  A very decisive vote as eight of the sixteen starters were voted in unanimously.  We had a tight race at our second base position with Cano, Valentin and Hudson all within three votes of each other.

Not surprisingly, this will be the first year that my firstbaseman Albert Pujols will not start.  Despite his 26 homeruns, he is only hitting .252.  Mark Teixeira has him beat with much superior stats.

I mentioned before that I am the manager of our division this year due to our first place finish last year (yay!).  My job as manager now is to pick the substitutes and pitchers.  I’ve pretty much have finished that task but that is perhaps for another post.

Some people don’t understand our fervent appreciation for the game of APBA baseball.  I remember once about fifteen years ago I inquired about a rotisserie baseball league.  The guy I talked to was someone I just met and the league where stats were done manually not online (they were all done that way back then).

On the phone with the guy, I asked guy if he ever heard of APBA.  I could just see the sneer on his face.  He said no, and that his rotisserie league was a much more “sophisticated” league.

I never called the guy back.

The Yankees and Joe Torre

No doubt, after their ALDS loss to the Indians, the Yankees will be asking themselves some important questions now.  Most hyped now, of course, is whether Joe Torre will keep his job.  I’m not a Yankees fan but I have a healthy respect for Mr Torre.  I also wouldn’t want his current job for anything.  … Continue reading “The Yankees and Joe Torre”

I’m not a Yankees fan but I have a healthy respect for Mr Torre.  I also wouldn’t want his current job for anything.  Let’s face it, given his past performances in recent years, anything outside of a World Series win will be considered a failure.

I’ve heard some Torre press conferences particularly those after key losses.  After dealing with the press,  I wouldn’t be surprised if went backstage and banged his against the wall.

Should the Yankees replace Torre?  I guess I don’t really care.  I will say this.  There will be plenty of teams interested in him.  As long as he isn’t burned out and not ready for a break.

Tiger Todd Jones speaks out on MLB scheduling

Todd Jones has it all figured out.  He gives his opinion on the playoff schedule on his Your Turn column at the Sporting News website entitled All the Playoff Teams Deserve Prime-time.  How would he fix it?  So, how do you fix it? You cut some games off the regular season and make the postseason … Continue reading “Tiger Todd Jones speaks out on MLB scheduling”

Todd Jones has it all figured out.  He gives his opinion on the playoff schedule on his Your Turn column at the Sporting News website entitled All the Playoff Teams Deserve Prime-time

How would he fix it?

So, how do you fix it? You cut some games off the regular season and make the postseason like a true second season. You let more teams in the playoffs and then schedule more off-days so more teams get in the prime-time slot…

Finally, you tell the West Coast teams they’ll have to give up their night games in the postseason so the rest of the country can watch — and not have to read about — Jose Valverde saving the first game of the Diamondbacks-Cubs series.

It’s a refreshing article.  Not because I necessarily agree with it all but because it expresses a legitimate opinion.  And one that doesn’t toe the company line.

And because he calls the Yankees the Evil Empire.  Todd Jones, he has a sense of humor.
