Harold Reynolds interviews Goose Gossage

2008 Hall of Fame inductee Goose Gossage is Harold Reynolds’ guest on MLB.com’s Baseball Channel.  Harold plays a little “This is Your Life” when he surprises the Goose by bringing his former manager Chuck Tanner into the interview. Goose was rather touched it seemed.

Also during the interview, Gossage talked of Dick Allen and how he took him under his wing and was instrumental in teaching Gossage about pitching from a hitter’s point of view.

I’ve heard a lot of things about Dick Allen but this anecdote gave me a different insight into the man.

You can access the interview from mlb.com.

Len and Bob Bash- Jan 17

Those of you who get into town for the Cubs Convention a day early (or simply live in Chicago) can party with other Cub fans at the Len and Bob Bash at the House of Blues.  The Bash takes place Thursday Jan 17 and tickets are available at the House of Blues’ website.

It’s sponsored by broadcasters Len Kasper and Bob Brenly and will raise money for Chicago Cubs charities.  Last year, $50,000 was raised.

This year, alternative-country group Son Volt will perform.  Doors open at 7:30pm.

Len Kasper appeared on the Cubs Closeup podcast yesterday and talked (among other things) about the event.

The Goose gets in… but others get left out

Goose Gossage, top reliever from the 70s and 80s, finally got his due.  In his ninth year of eligibility, he was the lone selection by the writers

Goose is known primarily for his years with the New York Yankees, a stretch of six years where he pitched well enough to even be considered for the MVP and Cy Young (he was third in voting in both in 1980).

Rich_Gossagebb That said, he did pitch and pitched well for the White Sox and the Padres where he put together strings of five years each.  It was with the Sox in 1976 when he pitched his last start.  That year he started 29 games going 9-17 with a 3.94 ERA.

Since then, he didn’t look back and his role was defined.  Throughout his career he garnered 310 saves, leading the league three times.  He currently is 17th all-time in that category, that record succumbing to the specialization of the bullpen ace.

Like Bruce Sutter who was selected two years before him, Gossage revolutionized the role the bullpen ace.  Stats aside, he was part of baseball’s change of bullpen strategy.  How it approached the late innings.

The Rest

As much as this story is about Gossage, it also about those who didn’t get in.  I don’t remember a year where so many players were on ballot who many feel could be easily justified entry into the Hall.

The Jim Rice debate has been going on for years.  He missed this year by 16 votes.  Andre Dawson (third in voting this year) has been a favorite of many fans.  I’ve always felt Bert Blyleven deserves a nod but he’s never gotten higher than 53.3% of the vote until this year.  This time around, BB came close(r) with 61.9% of the vote.

Lee Smith, Dave Concepcion, Dale Murphy, the list goes on.

Then, of course there is Mark McGwire.  I get the feeling that for most people, it’s a hot/cold issue.  Either you throw out any substance issues out the windows and cast your ballot or you don’t.  This year, 128 writers felt he was HOF-worthy and that ain’t gonna cut it.

Rod “Shooter” Beck garned two post-mortem votes.  But Travis Fryman?

Cubs Convention in Two Weeks

Cubsconv1

There’s one more indication that baseball is in the air.  Two weeks from today, the 2008 Cubs Convention begins.  I got my ticket in the mail this afternoon.

This year’s pass, seen above, contrasts greatly from the one from last year.  The one from 2007 was a cautiously optimistic photo of new manager Lou Piniella (so new, I thought that they didn’t have a photo of him with a Cubs cap).

This year’s has a jubilant Alfonso Soriano almost leaping across the pass.  A very cool photo.

Near as I can tell, there has been no announcement of who will be attending this year’s convention.  If I remember correctly, they usually announce this kind of stuff the week of the event.  So we have to make do with the lists of players from last year and hope that this year’s event will be similar.

But alas, no Rod Beck.  He was pretty popular with the fans in 2007.

Check out my notes and photos from the 2007 Cubs Convention.  It was my first ever and I had a blast.

Sandberg back as Peoria skipper… Cubs also get leftovers from the Pirates

This is relatively old news but Ryno is back as manager of the Peoria Chiefs, the Cubs Class A team.  Ryno didn’t do half bad his first year as a manager going 71-68 with the Chiefs.  And one of my New Year’s resolutions is to make it to at least one Peoria Chiefs game this year.

Also mentioned in Carrie Muskat’s article about Sandberg is that the Cubs have brought on former Bucs GM Dave Littlefield to join the scouting staff.  I did a double take when I read that then drew a deep sigh of resignation.  Todd, our resident Pirate fan, has gone on numerous rants on Littlefield on our podcast.  Find any episode that Todd is co-hosting and I’ll guarantee that he spends a few minutes on the topic.

So we’ll see.

Latest Sox trade nets Swish

The Cubs had solved their outfield situation with the acquisition of Kosuke Fukudome but it was up in the air what the Sox were going to do about their outfileld problem… until today.

The White Sox sent three prospects to the Oakland A’s for the services of outfielder Nick Swisher.  The three prospects are pitchers Gio Gonzalez and Fautino De Los Santos and outfielder Ryan Sweeney.

I have always liked Swisher.  To me, his style is a throwback to generation ago.  On a good day, he reminds me of Jeff Burroughs (before he sorta petered out) and on his bad days he’s like a Rob Deer.  He has potential for power though last year he only mustered 22 dingers.  One plus for Nick… he’s not afraid to take a walk.

By the way, switch-hitting Swisher is a Big Ten alum.  He hails from Ohio State.  Don’t hold it against him, Illini fans.

If I were a Sox fan, I might be a little concerned about letting Gio Gonzalez go.  The White Sox acquired Gio in the Freddie Garcia trade with the Phils.  Back then, I heard that Gonzalez was the real deal just that needed some time.  Since then, he’s been tearing up AA and only getting better.  Maybe some Sox fans might want to chime in with their opinion on that.

Does this put the Sox back on the right track for 08?  Well, it’s a good start.  Just don’t give up the farm.

Happy New Year!! Baseball is right around the corner!
