Baseball Zealot Radio #12- Interview with Chris Robinson from Spring Training

This was exciting for me. Chris Robinson is a former Illini catcher who when I saw him play, I thought had promise. Sure enough, he was drafted 90th overall in 2005 by the Detroit Tigers. Last year to my delight, he was traded to the Cubs. He finished the season at the Cubs’ single-A Daytona … Continue reading “Baseball Zealot Radio #12- Interview with Chris Robinson from Spring Training”

Last year to my delight, he was traded to the Cubs. He finished the season at the Cubs’ single-A Daytona and made a real impact there hitting .356.

Now, he’s in Spring Training with the Cubs and he took a few minutes to talk with me. Turn up the speakers and take a listen to the interview.

Baseball Zealot Radio- Show #11

Chuck and I host this week. Afterwards, Chuck said that hosting Baseball Zealot Radio is just like our APBA weekends except we’re not rolling dice. Chuck and I host this week. Afterwards, Chuck said that hosting Baseball Zealot Radio is just like our APBA weekends except we’re not rolling dice. To be honest, that’s exactly what I had in mind when I conceived the idea for BZR.

When we get together to play APBA, we inevitably get into discussions about baseball whether it be current hot stove action or the playoff race (depending on the time of year) or reminiscing about the “good old days”. Of course, depending who was talking and how old they were, we could be talking about different eras. We were a fount of baseball knowledge, we usually knew what we were talking about and the converstions were sometimes animated.

Regardless, we always talked baseball and that was my inspiration for Baseball Zealot Radio.

Check out this week’s show. We run the gamut of Spring Training topic but focus on Cubs and Sox plus we hit on the Veterans Committee HOF announcement on Tuesday.

Baseball Zealot Radio Show #10- coldest week this year and we’re supposed to talk baseball?

We’re in double digits now. We go a little off-topic and bring in Zealot reader and Bear fan Tyler Davis who was unlucky enough to go to the Super Bowl. He gives us his impression of the game. As it always does when he and I talk, the discussion does eventually move to the Cubs … Continue reading “Baseball Zealot Radio Show #10- coldest week this year and we’re supposed to talk baseball?”

We’re in double digits now.

We go a little off-topic and bring in Zealot reader and Bear fan Tyler Davis who was unlucky enough to go to the Super Bowl. He gives us his impression of the game. As it always does when he and I talk, the discussion does eventually move to the Cubs so it’s ok.

Chuck and I jabber about ticket prices at Wrigley and the Cell.

It seems a lot of baseball people passed away recently and he and I do our best to remember them.

And then there were ballplayers still alive that some teams were trying to forget. Will any team pick up Juan Gonzalez?

Take a listen and tell a friend.

BZR Show #9- Interview with University of Illinois Head Coach Dan Hartleb

Coach Dan Hartleb from the University of Illinois baseball team is our guest this week on Baseball Zealot Radio. Coach Dan Hartleb from the University of Illinois baseball team is our guest this week on Baseball Zealot Radio.

A word about Coach Hartleb… usually when I interview someone “important”, I get a little nervous. One sentence from Coach Hartleb and he put me at ease. He seems like such an easy-going fella. I wonder if that extends to his coaching.

Anyone with even a passing interest in the Illini or college baseball should listen to this podcast episode. He gives a good rundown of the team and its future.

Also, if this show interests you, Baseball Zealot Radio’s interview with Illini shortstop Shawn Roof is a must-listen. Roof was also easy (and fun) to interview. You’ll find Roof’s interview half-way through our fifth show. Somewhere in there co-host Todd asks him if he ever plays NCAA Baseball (the video game). The response is hilarious.

BZR interviews Baseball Reference’s Sean Forman

If you’re a user of Baseball Reference, definitely check out this week’s episode of Baseball Zealot Radio. We interview Sean Forman the creator and maintainer of the baseball stats web site which will celebrate its seventh birthday next month.

Seems like I’ve been using it for that long. If you use it, I don’t need to tell you how good it is.

Anyway, Sean gives us a “behind-the-scenes” look at one of the most definitive stat web sites out there.

Take a listen.

Shawn advises me on how to get close to the big guys at the Cubs Convention. Dubious methods, I can guarantee you.

We have one last discussion about the Hall ballot before it’s too late. Also, we take a good look at Randy Johnson and Barry Zito. Not too close of a look though. Have you seen the Unit’s face when he pitches?

Take a listen to our show.

Next week:

Next week, we’re planning an exciting show. Sean Forman, who maintains Baseball-Reference.com will be our guest. I personally am looking forward to that show. Stay tuned!

Shawn Roof

In the dugout, Illini shortstop Shawn Roof can never stop talking. Fortunately for us, the same was true when Baseball Zealot Radio interviewed him for our latest show. Shawn had plenty to say.

Shawn talked about the Illini’s chances for 2007 and what it was like growing up around ballplayers as the son of professional baseball coach Gene Roof. He talked about his hopes and aspirations for Illini and beyond.

By the way, the family involvement doesn’t stop with him and his father, either. Well, there’s his uncle Phil Roof. But you would have guessed that. He has two brothers as well though. One plays for Michigan State and the other just signed a letter of intent with Michigan State as well. I’m definitely not missing THAT series.

Check out the show. It’s a good one. Todd and I yak a bit about Matsuzaka and the Pirates for the first half then we get down to business with the interview of Shawn.

During the show, Shawn brought up some interesting trivia. As a matter of fact, I pose it in the form of a question. You can listen to the show to find the answer (or probably use Google).

What strange significance does ’90s Atlanta pitcher Ben Rivera have in regards to the Rule 5 draft?

We also hit on the Ford Frick award nominees.

While I’m on the topic of BZR, I want to say thanks to Brandon Rosage of Outsider Radio who plugged Baseball Zealot Radio on his show. Check out Brandon’s show if you get the chance. It’s on my podcast roll for a reason.

If you haven’t checked out our show, give it a whirl. You don’t need an iPod to hear our stuff. Just a computer with sound.
