Making his case for the Final Vote

3 for 5, 2B, 2 HR, 4 runs, 4 rbis

Hafner is probably one of best hitters left off the AL All-Star roster. And he’s doing his best to convince fans to vote for him in the Final Vote.

His latest effort came at the expense of the Yankees when the Cleveland Indians won by the score of 19-1, its most lopsided home victory since 1950.

Special mention goes to teammate Victor Martinez who went 5 for 6.

7/1/06 Linescore of the Day: A.J. Pierzynski

Do we need to go through this again?

A.J. hit a 3-run shot off Ryan Demptser to win the game for the Sox.

Hmm… you think the Wrigley fans took that very well??

No, the dolts threw litter on the field causing a five-minute delay. I have a six year old who knows how to act better than that. Sheesh. One more thing that people can point to about Cub fans.

Oh, and not to defend A.J. or anything but Ozzie Guillen can learn something from him about the proper way to “get back” at a team.

6/30/06 Linescore of the Day: Juan Uribe

3 for 4, 2B, HR, run, 5 rbi “One man wrecking crew” is what the media called Juan and that about summed him up. He drove in five of the Sox’ eight runs in their 8-2 defeat of the hapless Cubbies yeaterday in the much anticpated matchup. A.J. and Michael kissed and made up. A.J. and Michael kissed and made up. The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if it was ordered encouraged from above for the benefit of the camera. Yes, they are friends which I think furthers my point.

I’ll put my tinfoil hat away now.

Correction: That’s Juan Uribe not Jose.

6/28/06 Linescore of the Day: Miguel Tejada

6 for 10, 2 2B, 3 runs, 3 rbis In yesterday’s doubleheader sweep against the Phils, Tejada worked overtime. He went 2 for 5 and 4 for 5. To think the Cubs almost had him for Mark Prior. And everyone thought THAT was a bad idea.

That kind of talk is usually reserved for late rounds when all the primo picks are gone and you’re deciding between someone who might help you a little this year or someone who has the potential to develop for future years.

But in this case, even with 2005 rookies like King Felix, Cano, Francouer etc available, I know now exactly what he was talking about.

But I think Big Joe Mauer, now hitting .377, has exceeded even his expections in this half season.

6/25/06 Linescore of the Day: Tadahito Iguchi

2 for 5, 2 HR, 2 runs, 7 rbis Put this in the “What does a guy gotta do? category. Sox second sacker Tad Iguchi blasted two shots including a grand slam in the ninth to tie the game. Unfortuately for the Sox, they couldn’t hold on as the Astros scored in the thirteenth. His … Continue reading “6/25/06 Linescore of the Day: Tadahito Iguchi”

His seven rbis was a career high.

A couple side points to followup on my post on leadoff men:

– As soon as I make dig at Juan Pierre’s inability to get on base, he goes 3 for 5 the next day. I’m making a mental note.

– Jose Reyes went 4 for 5 for the second straight day. As a matter of fact, in his last 8 games, he is batting .583 (21 for 36) and slugging .944.

6/24/06 Linecore(s) of the Day: Leadoff Men

Unusual LSOTD, today. It just seems that the leadoff guys did their job Saturday. Here are some selected stats from some of those unheralded leadoff men from yesterday: Grady Sizemore: 1 for 3, HR, run, rbi, walk James Rollins: 3 for 5, 2B, run, rbi Jose Reyes: 4 for 5, 2 runs (he also hit … Continue reading “6/24/06 Linecore(s) of the Day: Leadoff Men”

Unusual LSOTD, today. It just seems that the leadoff guys did their job Saturday. Here are some selected stats from some of those unheralded leadoff men from yesterday:

Grady Sizemore: 1 for 3, HR, run, rbi, walk
James Rollins: 3 for 5, 2B, run, rbi
Jose Reyes: 4 for 5, 2 runs (he also hit for the cycle on Wednesday)
Mark Kotsay: 2 for 5, 2B, run, 2 rbis
Randy Winn: 2 for 4, walk
Julio Lugo: 3 for 4, run, walk
David Eckstein: 2 for 4, 2 runs, walk
Curtis Granderson: 4 for 5, 3 runs, rbi, walk
Rickie Weeks: 2 for 5, 2B, run, 2 rbis
David DeJesus: 3 for 5, 2B, 2 rbis
Gary Matthews Jr.: 2 for 5, HR, run, rbi
Ichiro: 2 for 4, run, walk
Mike Cameron: 1 for 5, HR, run, rbi (but 3 Ks… maybe that wasn’t so hot all things considered)
Chone Figgins: 2 for 7, run, 2 rbis
Craig Counsell: 1 for 5, HR, run, rbi (see Mike Cameron)

There were a few that didn’t produce. Bautista went 0 for 4. Juan “you mean I can’t steal first base?” Pierre was 1 for 4 with nothing to show for it. But overall, a good showing for the #1 class.

A word about Julio Lugo… he’s really come on for TB. Through the end of May, he was hitting .260 with an OBP of .296. Not exactly leadoff material. He has really come on and has brought his average up to .279 (OBP .341). His power has increased too (slg pct .389 to .453).

He was out for a couple weeks in early May with a May with a muscle strain which most likely accounts for the early season troubles.

Pujols returns and one bad pitch for Rookie Reyes

At the beginning of the Sox-Cardinals game tonight, the big story was the return of the Heir Apparent. Albert Pujols was making his debut after rehabbing from his strained right oblique. Out since June 3, that has been just enough time for the rest of the league to catch up with him. Pujols still leads … Continue reading “Pujols returns and one bad pitch for Rookie Reyes”

At the beginning of the Sox-Cardinals game tonight, the big story was the return of the Heir Apparent. Albert Pujols was making his debut after rehabbing from his strained right oblique. Out since June 3, that has been just enough time for the rest of the league to catch up with him. Pujols still leads the league with 25 homeruns but he now has company. Ryan Howard is tied with him. In the rbi department, Howard is one up on him 66-65.

Against the Sox, Pujols had an uneventful 0 for 4 day.

By the end of the day, the story was Anthony Reyes’ one hitter. Unfortunately, that one hit was a homerun by Peoria native Jim Thome. Even more unfortunate, that was the only run of the 1-0 Sox win and Reyes had to settle for a loss.

This was Reyes’ fourth major league start and first complete complete game. White Sox hurler Freddie Garcia was on the other end of the pitchers’ duel. He combined with Bobby Jenks in a 4-hit shutout.

Here’s Viva El Birdos’ take on Reyes aptly named reyes our hopes

Jose Reyes was good for the cycle on Wednesday against the Reds. It wasn’t enough though as Billy Wagner gave way with 2 outs in the ninth to a Reds’ rally. Two quick walks and two base hits was all the Reds needed to turn it into their favor.

I watched this game last night on MLB.TV. While we’re on the topic of the Mets, I have to say they have to be one of the most exciting teams to watch in the NL. Traditionally, they have not been one of my favorite teams but lately, when I scroll through Mosaic deciding which game I should watch, my mouse will end up clicking on a Mets game because I know it will be a good game.

Last night was no exception.

I caught up with the action when the Mets were down by two. Before I knew it, the Mets had scored three capped by Jose Valentin’s homerun (hit left-handed against a lefty, by the way. Something he should more often, in my opinion but that’s fodder for another article). The Reds did come back to win but point is there seems to be excitement brewing with the Mets.

6/20/06 Linescore of the Day: Ryan Howard

3 for 4, 2 HR, 2 runs, 7 rbis

Boy, Ryan Howard gave it all. His two homeruns in addition to a triple contributed to 7 rbis. Those 7 rbis accounted for all the runs the Phillies got last night. Sadly, for Howard and his teammates, that wasn’t enough as the Yankees with the help of Johnny Damon, won 9-7.

Is there any question now that Howard is the real deal?

Of course, special mention goes to the White Sox who scored two touchdowns and two fields goal with 24 hits. Two interesting points of this game. One, the Sox walked only once. Two, every starter had at least one rbi except ironically, slugger Jim Thome.
