4/3/08: JOHNNY CUETO – WOW!!!

johnny-cueto.jpg

Through five innings of his major league debut Johnny Cueto is making it look much too easy. Cueto has a perfect game with eight K’s and the Reds lead the Diamondbacks 3-0. Johnny is only 5’10” tall, but has the heart of a lion and is shaking off his veteran catcher in his first big league start. He is pitching with a purpose.

I saw this kid in the grapefruit league when I saw the Reds in Dunedin. As I was leaving the ballpark I had to ask a scout with a gun what he had “that Cueto guy” clocked at, between 92-94 was his reply.

3/31/08 Linescore of the Day: X marks the Spot

Xavier Nady:  4 for 7, 2B, 2 HR, 4 runs, 4 rbis

Don’t you just love looking at boxscores from opening day?  Seeing those garish batting averages like .750 or .500 0r .000.  Or ERAs like 54.00 or 40.50.

Xavier Nady got a good head start on 2008.  With his 2 homers, double and single, he could go 0 for 4 in the next 4 games before his slugging percentage dips below .500.

More importantly, his second homer in the 12th put Pittsburgh ahead for good to defeat Atlanta.

3/30/08 Linescore of the Day: Ryan Zimmerman

Ryan Zimmerman:  1 for 4, HR, run, rbi

One hit, one rbi, and run but boy did it really matter.  Ryan Zimmerman’s homerun in the bottom of the ninth against the Braves won the game and put the Nationals in first place albeit after one day.

I would say enjoy it while you can but I think the Nats will be drastically improved over last year.  Maybe not first-place good but definitely better.  I remember last year about this time the baseball pundits were talking about Washington losing 120 for the 07 season.  Well, that didn’t happen but that still gives you an idea where they were then.

I think their prospects are much better for the 2008 season.

3/25/08 Linescore of the Day (Japan version): Huston Street

Let’s get things going with the LSOTDs..

Huston Street:  1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1BB, 2 K, 1 HR (BS)

By all rights, Manny Ramirez should win today’s honors with his 2 for 5, 4 rbi performance but I can’t resist putting Oakland’s reliever on the spot.  Huston, we indeed have a problem.  Ok, part of it is that I just traded him in my APBA league.  Vindication is mine!

Seriously, Street has historically done the worse in the spring months so my one game analysis may be a tad presumptive.  You can see his splits here.

On a different note, Projo Soxblog has a great photo of the Ellsbury catch from today’s game.

10/13/07 LCS Linescore of the Day: Jhonny Peralta

Jhonny Peralta: 3 for 5, 2B, HR, 3 runs, 4 rbis Jhonny P was the man with the bat (and the glove.. he was involved in 3 DPs) in Cleveland’s 10-6 win in Game 2 in the ALCS.  The much heralded 1-2 punch of both the Red Sox and Indians have faltered with the possible … Continue reading “10/13/07 LCS Linescore of the Day: Jhonny Peralta”

Jhonny Peralta: 3 for 5, 2B, HR, 3 runs, 4 rbis

Jhonny P was the man with the bat (and the glove.. he was involved in 3 DPs) in Cleveland’s 10-6 win in Game 2 in the ALCS.

The much heralded 1-2 punch of both the Red Sox and Indians have faltered with the possible exception of Beckett.  Josh pitched ok on Friday allowing two runs in six innings.  The combined ERA of the starters in Games 1 and 2 is an even 9.00 (19 ER in 19 innings).  That was not to be expected from three Cy Young candidates and a perennial post season pitcher.

It seems right now, that the ALCS will be won with the bat not the arm.

9-16-07: Josh Anderson Sunday to Remember

Josh Anderson (photo Jim Pierce)

Josh Anderson became the first rookie to reach base six times in a game since Arizona’s Conor Jackson on Aug. 25, 2006, and he was the first Astros rookie to do it since Joe Morgan on July 9, 1965 in a 12-inning game in Milwaukee. Anderson, who played 131 games with triple-A Round Rock, where he batted .273 with 17 doubles 6 triples & 2 homers, before arriving Sept. 1, had five hits and a walk.

“I’m a little bit surprised,” said Josh, who started his third straight game in centerfield and raised his batting average to .500. “I had a six-hit game in A-ball in 2004 and I had five hits one other time in the minors. It was just one of those days when you feel good, you feel locked in. It’s hard to describe. I guess it’s like a basketball player hitting several threes in a row.”

8/20/07 Linescore of the Day- Mark Teixeira

Mark Teixeira:  3 for 4, 2B, 2 HR, 4 runs, 6 rbis, BB Tex continues his tear with 4 homeruns, 10 rbis and 18 total bases in the past two games for the Braves definitely filling the the dire need they had at first base before the trade.

Orel Hershiser’s record of 59 consecutive scoreless innings in 1988 has been considered one of the more “unbreakable” records in baseball.  At one point, ESPN’s Page 2 column listed it among the records that “may never be beaten”

Should Orel be worried?

Granted after last night’s complete game shutout of the Braves, Brandon Webb is only tied for 12th on the list (with Rube Foster) with 42.  But consider this… he is only two complete game shutouts away from Hershiser’s record.

Time will tell.  Meanwhile, I’m impressed that Webbie is doing in style with a complete game shutouts and not 6 inning stints.  His last 3 starts were complete games and the two before that he last seven.  Any fantasy leaguers who own him must be quite pleased.

In a season where we have seen plenty of records and milestones broken, will we see one more?

8/16/07 Linescore of the Day: DeRosa, Jones, and Ramirez

 Jacque Jones:  4 for 5, 2 2B, run, 2 rbis

This Cub trio went for an incredible 13 for 15 on Thursday.  The Cubs as a team, managed to score their 12 runs against the Reds with 20 hits without the use of the longball.

It was DeRosa’s first 5-hit game of his career.
