Day two in the Sunshine State saw me in at Brighthouse
Field where the Philadelphia Phillies opened their
61st consecutive years of Spring Training in
Clearwater, FL. 61 consecutive years is the 2nd most
for any MLB team at a town for spring training, can
you name the longest?

The Cleveland Indians were the visitors and even
brought fewer big leaguers than Boston brought to
Dunedin the day before. Jason Michaels, Casey Blake,
& Andy Marte were the only major leaguers to make the
trip.

A ball was fouled straight back, bounced off the back
wall behind the plate, rolled to a halt a few feet
from me, and the guy I was talking with picked up the
souvineer. A better souvineer was launched in the
opposite direction as Ryan Howard CONNECTED bombing
one 460 feet over the centerfield scoreboard. This
kid is gonna be good, MVP, and just signed for
$900,000. I think the Phillies should have signed him
for more money, not because they had to, but because
it is the right thing to do.

NickyV and I saw him on a baseball roadtrip a couple
of years back. Howard ripped a double in Cincinnati
and NickyV exclaimed, “WHO IS THAT!” NickyV was smart
enough to grab him for his APBA team the State Street
Sluggers, coincidence – the Sluggers made their 1st
playoff appearance in ten years after drafting Ryan.

I saw Ryan Howard on HBO’s Real Sports. Turns out
Howard’s mother controls his money and gives him an
allowance. Gumbel commented, “Howard is the only MVP
to get an allowance from his mother”. Howard’s mother
gives him a hard time when he goes over his minutes on
his cellphone.

All you Fantasy Leaguers out there, listen up, Shane
Victorino is going to have a breakout year, possibly
.330 with doubles & steals, batting between Rollins &
Utley, with Howard driving them in. Shane is a
HUSTLER, always giving 110%, he was halfway to 2nd,
before retreating and settling for a single, he’s fun
to watch!

Day one of my Grapefruit League 2007 experience
started with a game between the Red Sox and the Blue
Jays. I ran into some members of the Japanese media
when I was picking up my tickets at Will Call, knowing
the Jays signed a Japanese pitcher, I said, “Tomo
Ohka”. They politely smiled & nodded. After looking
at the teams rosters upon putting my fanny into my
seat, I realized Dice-K may have been the reason for
Japanese media being on hand, and suddenly didn’t feel
so well informed. However I was vindicated when I
noticed the BoSox only brought four major leaguers to
this road game, Willy Mo Pena, Eric Hinske, Alex Cora,
& Dustin Pedroia.

87 year old Mickey Carroll, a Munchkin from the
original Wizard of Oz, threw out the first pitch.

Turns out he’s a HUGE St. Louis Cardinals fan, who
even knew Dizzy Dean. Melissa McGhee from American
Idol fame sang both the Canadian (needed crib notes)
and the American National Anthems. There’s a very
entertaining beer vendor, who yells things like,
“AAAAY”, “GENUINE MOLSON IN A BUDWEISER CAN”, “BUY A
BEER, GET ONE BEER, BUY TWO BEERS, GET TWO BEERS”, and
my personal favorite, “IF YOU CAN’T CATCH A BALL,
CATCH A BUZZ”. He even sang, “TAKE ME OUT TO THE
BALLGAME” during the 7th inning stretch.

Aaron Hill paced the Jays to a 4-1 win with a two run
homer to left, while Roy Halladay picked up the
victory.

Went to Dunedin to see the Jays host the Rays at
Knology Park. Scott Kazmir was matched up against
A.J. Burnett, but neither was scheduled to go more
than two innings. It was an overcast, blustery, cold
mid-sixties day as a local kid proclaimed, “PLAY BALL”
over the PA system. TB’s Jonny Gomes hitched a couple
of drives to RF to the outgoing wind and drove them
over the wall. Troy Glaus blasted one over the
leftfield fence. Alot of media from Japan was on hand
to watch Tomo Ohka get lit up for four runs before he
settled down. B.J. Upton started the game at 2B, then
misplayed a ball in CF, maybe he should try catcher!

Five teams compete in the Al Ogletree Classic; Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, University of Texas San Antonio, the host team University of Texas Pan-American, and… Illinois.

One of teams is not like the other…

Saturday brings Pan-American and on Sunday’s game is against Stephen Austin.

By the way, fightingillini.com is using a new version of Gametracker. There’s a link from their baseball page.

Good luck Illini!

U of I alum makes appearance in Spring Training

One more Illini-related item. U of I alum Jason Anderson made an appearance yesterday in Chicago Cubs’ first Spring Training game. Unfortunately, he was lit up for 4 hits and 4 runs though all of them were unearned.

Update: Illinois Wins!!

The Illini came out victorious against Sam Houston! The first win is always the sweetest. The score as 14-5 and the big hero was Lars Davis who went 4 for 5 with 3 runs and 2 rbis. Scott Shaw got the win with 5 solid innings.

And before I forget, I want to let you know of new thing that Illini baseball has going on. They have a weekly podcast which will include many of coaches and players. Ben Taylor is the host. The first two episodes are out and Head Coach Dan Hartleb is guest on both of them. Illini diamond fans should definitely check it out.

Here is the entry point for the 2007 U of I Baseball Podcasts

Baseball Zealot Radio #12- Interview with Chris Robinson from Spring Training

This was exciting for me. Chris Robinson is a former Illini catcher who when I saw him play, I thought had promise. Sure enough, he was drafted 90th overall in 2005 by the Detroit Tigers. Last year to my delight, he was traded to the Cubs. He finished the season at the Cubs’ single-A Daytona … Continue reading “Baseball Zealot Radio #12- Interview with Chris Robinson from Spring Training”

Last year to my delight, he was traded to the Cubs. He finished the season at the Cubs’ single-A Daytona and made a real impact there hitting .356.

Now, he’s in Spring Training with the Cubs and he took a few minutes to talk with me. Turn up the speakers and take a listen to the interview.

Maz giving tips, not cheering for Bonds

Bill Mazeroski was on hand at Pirate City to give Freddy Sanchez some tips on handling the ball. Who better than Maz who was a fair to middlin’ secondbaseman in his day? “When you watch film of Maz, you can’t see the transfer,” Sanchez said. “It’s like … nothing.” “Freddy can be a fine second … Continue reading “Maz giving tips, not cheering for Bonds”

“When you watch film of Maz, you can’t see the transfer,” Sanchez said. “It’s like … nothing.”

“Freddy can be a fine second baseman,” Mazeroski said.

While some (including Commissioner Bud Selig) are side-stepping the Barry Bonds/homerun record issue, Maz was unabashed about the whole thing.

“I hope it doesn’t happen,” he said. “It’s just the steroids issue and all that stuff. I’d like to see Hank keep the record.”

It’s nice when some people, despite what you think about their opinions, aren’t afraid to speak their minds.

Abreu joins list of injured

Bobby Abreu has a strained oblique muscle and will be out for 2-3 weeks. Call it a blessing or a curse. The good news is that he will be back for opening day. Call it a blessing or a curse. The good news is that he will be back for opening day. Whether or not he will actually be ready is another question.

Abreu joins Kris Benson, Carl Pavano and Corey Koskie who have already suffered injuries this year. Koskie’s injury was carried over from last year but he is suffering from post-concussion syndrome.

Opening Day for Illini tomorrow!

Tomorrow night the University of Illinois baseball team begins their 2007 season! They face the Ragin’ Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette. Good luck, Illini!!

Chris Robinson in his Illini days

In other Illini news, I’ve been in email contact with former Illini catcher Chris Robinson. Last I heard from Robbie, he was packing to go to Spring Training.

Last year, he was drafted by the Tigers last year (83rd overall, highest ever by an Illini) then traded to the Cubs organization midseason. He finished up in single-A Daytona.

And now Robbie’s on his way to his first Spring Training. Good luck, Robbie! Hit em where they ain’t!

Correction: Commenter Roger correctly points out that Chris was drafted in 2005, not 2006.

I’m not going but I know a few who are. Carrie Muskat and her staff have put together a Cubs Spring Training Fan Guide. Very handy if you are lucky enough to go see the Cubs in Spring Training.

Even how to make it easier to get autographs.

A lot of fans camp at the entrance to the Fitch Park facility and hope players will stop to sign from their cars. The players have a schedule during the workouts, so don’t be discouraged if they don’t sign during practice. Once the games begin at HoHoKam, the seats along the right-field line are best for the Cubs — that’s where their dugout is — and many fans wait by the players’ parking lot.

Of course, this is coming from someone who has a press pass. I think I’d rather hear it from the fan’s perspective.

Nevertheless, some good all-around info.

Muskat also submits a good Cubs 2007 preview including projected lineups, rotation and bullpen as well as write-ups on key players.

Dang, I refresh my browser over and over and Soriano still shows up in the leadoff spot.
