University of Illinois physicist Alan Nathan was interviewed by USAToday on the effects of the gyroball.

“What makes Matsuzaka so effective is that he has an arsenal of pitches,” Nathan says. “The gyroball is just one more of his tools, and he doesn’t actually need to throw it. He just has to have the batter think he might.”
