Harold Baines to be honored

Good on the Sox.

They announced that Harold Baines, personally one of my favorite White Sox player of my generation, will be immortalized with a life-sized statue outside the Cell.  The unveiling of the statue will take place July 22 of this year.

I’ve never been a fan of the DH but despite that, Harold Baines amazed me with the way he kept coming back year after year.  Some of us have forgotten that he was a decent fielder and even an ok baserunner before knee problems got in the way.  Regardless, Baines made a career out of the designated hitter.

He is the seventh Sox player to have a likeness erected on the concourse near centerfield.  He will join Charles A. Comiskey, Minnie Minoso, Carlton Fisk, Luis Aparicio, Nellie Fox and Bill Pierce.

For his 22-year career, Baines hit .289 with 384 homeruns and 1628 rbis.

Makeup game forces last minute home opener for Illini

Game #14

Mon Mar 24, 3 pm CST

Record: 7-6

vs Judson University

at Illinois Field, Champaign, IL

Those of you looking forward to attending the University of Illinois home opener, be ready to change your plans.  Because of multiple cancellations because of weather, the Illini have scheduled a midweek home game on Monday at 3pm.  This game will be the first of the year for the team.

The team they will be facing is the Judson University Eagles out of Elgin.  Two things you need to know out of the batter’s box about Judson.  One, Illinois has never played them before and two, they are 1-10 so far this season.

If I know the Illini baseball program, they aren’t going to become over-confident about that 1-10 record.  They tend to take every team seriously.  I think it was last year when Judson’s conference-mates, Robert Morris gave them a run for their money before they closed the book on them.

Assuming I can get away from work early, I’ll see you at the ballpark.

Finally, here are the details on Judson University:

Opponent: Judson University
Nickname: Eagles
Conference: Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference
Head Coach: Rich Benjamin (1st year)
Location: Elgin, IL
Current Record: 1-10
Baseball Program website: Link
Players to watch: Freshman OF Oscar DePablos, who hails from Caracas, Venezuela, leads the team with a .324 batting average.  In addition, he’s played every game this year.
Team Fact: This is the first time in history that Illinois will face Judson though they have faced conference mates Robert Morris and St Xavier in past years.

Assuming I can get away from work early, I’ll see you at the ballpark.

Peoria Chiefs still in the running… in the Minor League Logo Contest??

What do minor league teams do what with all the players in spring training and the first game of the season weeks away?  Simple.. take part in a logo contest.  SportBiz with Darren Rovell which you can find on CNBC.com is hosting a minor league logo contest.  Logos are pitted against each other and anyone can vote for their favorite.

The Cubs local single-A affiliate Peoria Chiefs are doing pretty well for themselves.  They’ve made to the “Sweet Sixteen” of the best minor league team logos.  Judge for yourselves.

For my friends in the Quad City area, the River City Bandits are still in the running too.

One more local favorite (and home to former Illini Brian Blomquist last year) is the Southern Illinois Miners.

Heroes of the Negro Leagues watercolors

Biz_Mackey

ArtInsights has an interview with artist Mark Chiarello who is featuring his watercolor exhibit entitled “Heroes of the Negro Leagues” on March 29 at the ArtInsights Gallery in Reston, Virginia.

The watercolors were originally packaged as a set of trading cards in 1990 and are now featured in the exhibit as well as appearing in a hard cover book with the same name.

Put me in the “I don’t know art but I know what I like” category.  And I do like these.  Read ArtInsight’s interview with Chiarello and look at his online gallery.  If you’re so moved, you can buy the book

Bruce sent down

Jay Bruce, named #1 Prospect by MiLB.com and Baseball America, has been sent down to the minors by the Reds.

This news will no doubt get the Baker-haters fuming.  I know a few who say that Dusty doesn’t like new kids and will only play veterans.  With the signing of the similarly left-handed CF Corey Patterson, I have to say it looks a lot like that.   My guess however, is that it’s a case of a crowded outfield.

Outwardly at least, Bruce seems to have the right idea:

“I knew what they’d tell me when I went in there,” Bruce said at the Reds complex in Sarasota, Fla. “You don’t want to get sent down. It’s disappointing. But I will feed off of it, go to Louisville and play well.”

I’m curious to what Zealot co-blogger Teddy Ballgame thinks.  He saw Bruce play down in spring training and even chatted up his father.

Spring Break Trip puts Illinois above .500

Four hits by first baseman Ryan Hastings helped Illinois put down the Kansas Jayhawks 11-9 on Wednesday.  Aside from going 4 for 4, Hastings clubbed a homer and a double with 3 runs and 2 rbis.  Kyle Hudson, Joe Bonadonna and Brandon Wikoff all contributed 2 hits apiece.

It was was a close victory though.  Illinois had a 10-2 lead by the 6th when the Jayhawks battled back with three runs in the 7th and two runs in the eighth and ninth.  Ben Reeser came on in the ninth to get the last out for the save.

Thursday, the Illini were scheduled to take on University of Northern Iowa but the game was canceled due to weather.  The game will not be re-scheduled.

Today, the good guys played a doubleheader against Central Connecticut State.  Game One went to CCSU 8-7 despite Illinois rallying from an 8-2 deficit.  Kyle Hudson contributed 3 rbis.

Game Two was another one-run game that went Illinois’ way.  Scott Shaw pitched a complete game win with Kyle Hudson (his name seems to be making his way into the highlights a lot isn’t it), frosh Casey McMurray and Brandon Wikoff all getting two hits.  More details at CCSU’s baseball website.

Coming Up

With that win, that puts the Illini at 7-6 for the season.  Not bad, considering that they started out 2-4.  With the tiring spring break schedule over, they get a slight rest.  The Illini’s schedule takes a turn now and they start playing up north.  On March 25, they play a midweek non-conference game against Indiana State.  Next weekend, they play an honest-to-goodness Big Ten conference game at Michigan State.

Our first home game?  April 2 against St Louis.  We don’t play a conference game at home till we play Michigan on April 11.

Go Illini!!

MLB needs a lesson in PR

Cape Cod Baseball League is volunteer-staffed and has a annual budget of less than $2 million.  So you can bet that the yearly grant of $100,000 from Major League Baseball is pretty critical.

Now that grant is in trouble because of licensing issues imposed by MLB.  The big leagues are requiring that all teams that share a team name with a MLB team purchase uniforms and souvenirs from MLB-licensed vendors (read: more expensive) or lose that grant.  MLB is also requesting an 11 percent royalty on all sales from affected teams.

Currently, the CCBL purchases its uniforms and merchandise from local sources.

This is just one more money grab by MLB.  It seems they are inventing newer and more creative ways to make a buck and alienating every fan base along the way.  Between cracking down on fantasy leagues and online reporting, the whole DirectTV mess a while back, plus the subtle increase of marketing of baseball, it seems everything MLB does is to bring in an extra buck.

Call me a rebel.  I think the offices of Major League Baseball is to become the stewards of the game of baseball that we love.  But it’s gotten way out of hand and the reason and purpose of the game has been lost.  And the Cape Cod Baseball League is a prime example.

Fortunately, the CCBL says they will not “roll over” or be “strong-armed” by MLB.

Look out Little Leagues… MLB is coming for you.

I’m back and so is Illinois’ offense

I took a five day hiatus from the blog and the sports world in general as the family and I went to Chicago for an extended weekend.  The only remotely sports related things I encountered was breezing by the Friendly Confines countless times on the Red Line and seeing a couple Chicago Blackhawks who were signing autographs near the ice rink at Millennium Park.  My thought:  get them out on the rink and get them to show their moves.

But now I’m back.  My first order of business was to check the University of Illinois results so far at Bradenton.  I held my breath and clicked… whew!  So far this week, they are 3-1!

They have won all three at the IMG’s Academy Park in Bradenton, Florida.  Their one loss is to Miami of Ohio which was played at Cincinnati Reds’ spring training digs, Ed Smith Stadium.

No doubt, the Illini have found their hitting shoes.  After averaging a little over four runs a game for the first six games, they average 8 for these four games thanks in part to a 15-11 win over Akron on Sunday.

The Illini saw some good pitching too most definitely from Aaron Martin who yesterday pitched a 5-0 complete game shutout.

Back on Friday, Kyle Hudson saw his six game hitting streak come to an end.  Despite that, he did contribute to the cause with a run, an rbi and his 4th stolen base of the year.

But dang, I wish I was there for Sunday’s 15-11 slugfest over Akron.  Despite the high score, it was a close one and it came down to the ninth.  DH Daniel Webb, who was oh for 4, hit a walk-off grand slam to win it.  What was it I said last week about knowing that these guys could hit the long ball??  I was right.  Dom Altobelli and Ryan Hastings also hit taters in this game.

By the way, team manager Mike Schroeder has some fun stuff to write about in this week’s edition of Diamond Notes

Three more games left in Illinois’ intense spring break schedule including today’s game against Kansas.

Go Illini!!

Illini go on Spring Break

After last weekend’s canceled series against Texas Tech, the University of Illinois baseball team heads south for spring break.  Their destination is the IMG Academies in Bradenton, Florida where they will play five games.  In between, they will take on Miami of Ohio at Ed Smith Stadium (the Cincinnati Reds’ spring training grounds) on Saturday and University of Northern Iowa at Manatee Community College on Thursday.

What it comes down to is a busy seven game run in eight days.  The good news is that Illinois is 6-1 against the teams they will be facing (their one loss is against Central Connecticut State).  That bodes well for the good guys who have a chance to improve their 2-4 record.

Date Opposing Team Location
March 14 Eastern Kentucky Academy Park
March 15 Miami (OH) Ed Smith Stadium
March 16 Akron Academy Park
March 18 Maryland-Baltimore County Academy Park
March 19 Kansas Academy Park
March 20 Northern Iowa Manatee Community College
March 21 Central Connecticut State Academy Park

Thanks to his six game hitting streak, Kyle Hudson is hitting .421 so far this young season.  He also has a .522 OBA and 3 steals which might have prompted Coach Hartleb to move him from his usual #9 spot in the order to leadoff two weeks ago against UI-Chicago.  We’ll see what he does with him this coming week.

The Illini have been out-homered 0 to 6 in the first six games.  I went to the Orange-Blue Series last fall so I know they’re capable of hitting it out.  Again, we’ll see what happens this week.

Go Illini!!
