Stay on the Mound, not the Mike

The whole Dempster-Guillen-Mike North affair is further evidence that ballplayers need to stay on the field and not in the media.  Let’s face it, the only person who benefits from all of this is North who gets free publicity for his radio show.

I’m sure the pitch to Dempster to do the show sounded appealing.  “Come on the show.  Talk about Cubs.  Give an inside look.”  The usual spiel.  But when something like the Barrett/Pierzynski debacle happens, do you think North is going to shy away from getting Demp from saying something he probably shouldn’t?  Doubtful.  I envision North with a widening smile his face egging him on.

Dempster, for the record, claims he never said some of things Guillen was upset about and the two of them have patched things up.  Meanwhile, North reaps the benefits.

A few in the baseball world have called for North to air the tapes from Dempster’s original broadcast to “clear the air” as whether he made the offending comments.   To what end?  What purpose would it serve other than to draw out this already old storyline?  If Guillen and Dempster are man enough to put this behind them then we should be too.

The only thing Dempster should be concentrating right now getting hitters out.  Not what he what he’ll be saying on his next show.

Get FRobbie a Hankie

Ok, that’s out of line.  I actually have a lot of respect for FRobbie.  Great player in his day and not a bad manager.  We’ll forget about the gun-brandishing episode.

But seriously, buck up and cut the tears Frankie.  I appreciate the sentiment but you’ve got a job to do and it would help if you would do it without turning on the waterworks.  I’m a pretty sensitive guy but let’s not get out of hand.  And if there are tears, let’s not display them for the nation to see.

I think LeCroy handled the whole thing with class and professionalism.  He knew he wasn’t up to the task and did what was best for the team.

“I’m man enough to take it. I don’t think he should get that emotional about it,” LeCroy said. “Hey, he’s doing his job, just like I would do if I was in his position.”

Nats blog Federal Baseball has a hilarious take on the whole situation.

Oriole starter Lopez won his first game of the season then lost his next 7 decisions.  Going into yesterday’s start, he had a 8.07 ERA.  Second-highest ERA in the AL.

But something clicked in Rodrigo yesterday.  He pitched 7 1/3 innings of 2-hit shutout ball against the Mariners AND got the win.

In what seems to be a trend, opposing pitcher Gil Meche struck out 10 in a losing cause.

Rookie Ranger secondbaseman Ian Kinsler blasted two out helping to erase a 7-0 Oakland lead, Kinsler just came off the DL and is batting .520 on the year. The A’s closer out of the University of Texas has had his troubles thus far this season, his ERA stands at 5.28. But the real story is about Texas DH Phil Nevin, who broke an 0-17 slump, and a homerless streak that extended back to a month ago Thursday. Nevin had seven homers in April, his most ever to start a season.

The Illini season is over.

Purdue eliminated them from the Big Ten tournment, defeating them 10-5.  Never mind the details (maybe later) except that the Illini had a 5-4 lead in the sixth but couldn’t hold it.

It will be a long bus ride home for them, I’m sure.

Then stepped up to the ticket window and bought over $450 worth of tickets for White Sox June home games, also going to see the Sox battle the Buccos in Pittsburgh. While I was in getting my tickets Jermaine Dye made two fantastic first inning catches, one took a homer away, later I actually saw Joe Crede imitate Brooks Robinson when he dove toward the line and fired to first to get his man. How about ARod for Crede (inside joke)? Wore my Mark Buehrle tee shirt, he got the win, but Bobby Jenks was lights out as he picked up Ozzie Guillen and the Sox shakey middle relief to save the game, striking out three of four batters. The White Sox hung on to win 3-2 and pick up the A’s sweep. Standing behind the last row behind the plate there are alot of distractions. BIG MIKE sez, “Why do you even bother coming to the game?” Well it’s all about the people, being a part of the crowd, and being a part of winning & exciting baseball. Over 40,000 Monday, 38,000 Tuesday, 38,000 Wednesday, all shiny happy people holding hands. Besides the hotties, Minnie Minoso walked by, and I gave him a nod. At 84 he’s still a great guy, his whole face smiles. The above picture of Minnie was of him many moons ago in the Cuban League. Also saw a guy I’d coached in little league baseball at Horner Park, about 30 years ago. Then I saw a guy who was in a fantasy baseball league with me about 10 years ago. The rain held off till we were riding the El home, then stopped when we reached our destination. Life is good! LET’S GO WHITE SOX!!!

Minnesota pitching nearly unhittable in first round

My hope that Illinois, riding a two-game winning streak, a streak that got them into the Big Ten tournament, would give them the momentum they needed to sweep through the tourney.  Gopher starting pitcher Cole DeVries had something to say about that.

Gopher hurler Cole DeVries

You see, Minnesota was riding a streak of their own.  An eight game winning streak.  Well, make that nine now.  DeVries pitched 8 innings of one-hit ball allowing only one run.  Indeed, the only run the Illini scored was in the second inning on a walk, error and a sac fly.  Trevor Huisinga got the only Illinois hit in the 5th with an uneventful single.  The win puts DeVries at 7-3 for the season.

Matt Whitmore, sometime ace closer, sometime starter, didn’t fare so well.  In 4 innings, Whitmore allowed four runs, three earned on six hits with only one strikeout.

Final score Minnesota 8  Illinois 1

Read the recap from GopherSports.com

So Illinois’ back is up against the proverbial wall.  They land in the loser’s bracket and are facing Purdue who lost to Ohio State.  Game time is 12:05pm today.

By the way, I’ve put links to the Big Ten Tournament page and bracket on the left sidebar while the tourney is happening.

Update:  Purdue has scored 4 in the 7th to jump ahead of Illinois 8-5.

NO 10 K GAMES

Brian Moehler Watching today’s Cub game on TV the announcers said Moehler was one of three starters in the majors who’ve started 175 games without a ten strikeout game. Can you name the other two???

Greg Maddux has been on my APBA team the Chicago Champions since I drafted him as a rookie. Today I’m watching him on TV pitch for the Cubs against the Florida Marlins. Maddux worked with a personal trainer in the off-season and jumped out to a 5-0 record in April. So far Greg is 0-3 in May, but he was cruising along with a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the 5th when a Marlin batter grounded one to Cub shortstop Ronny Cedeno. Cedeno’s throw couldn’t be handled by Todd Walker at firstbase, the scorer ruled it a basehit (bad ruling on a bad play). Florida went on to hit for the cycle in the 5th after two men were out. There shouldn’t have been an earned run in the 5th allowed by Maddux, but instead Greg let up five in the inning (six all day). Greg Maddux’ ERA soared to over 4.30 as Joe Borchard rocketed one over the RF wall. I’m pulling for Mad Dog, but it certainly is rough rooting for the Cubbies.

There were about 15 cuties celebrating a Wisconsin White Sox fan’s 21st birthday, gave her a kiss & a squeeze before heading to my usual spot beside Nancy Faust the Sox had the game pretty much in hand, homers were as easy as 3-4-5 (Thome, Konerko, Dye went yard in the 1st two innings, 5-0 Good Guys). White Sox ended up winning the game 9-3 Javier Vazquez over Kirk Saarloos.
